Hema Shilpa Uppala

Guru Hema Shilpa Uppala began her Kuchipudi journey at the age of seven at Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, the renowned institution founded by Vempati Chinna Satyam in the scenic city of Visakhapatnam. She trained under the guidance of Sri Chandra Rama Murthy, Sri Hari Rama Murthy, and Smt. Bala Kondala Rao, building a strong foundation in the classical art form from an early age.

By the age of ten, Ms. Hema Shilpa had already begun performing as both a solo artiste and a group performer. She played prominent roles in several acclaimed dance ballets choreographed by Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam, captivating audiences with her expressive artistry and graceful stage presence. Between 1989 and 1996, she performed extensively in Visakhapatnam and across major cities in India, earning admiration for her talent and dedication to Kuchipudi. After moving to the United States in 1997 following her marriage, Ms. Hema Shilpa continued to pursue and promote Kuchipudi with unwavering passion. Over the years, she has performed for major national Telugu associations, international cultural organizations, and numerous local community events across 36 states in America.

In 2002, she joined Academy of Kuchipudi Dance, founded by Guru Sasikala Penumarthi, where she contributed as a student, solo and group performer, and assistant teacher. Driven by her commitment to preserving and advancing the art form, she established the Indian Classical Dance Academy in 2012, through which she has trained and inspired many students in Kuchipudi dance. Ms. Hema Shilpa is known for her openness to artistic exploration and innovation. She has collaborated with artistes from various Indian classical dance traditions, including Kathak, Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, and Odissi, creating unique and enriching performances. Her constant pursuit of fresh concepts, creative collaborations, and innovative presentations has earned her widespread recognition and appreciation within the Indian community in Atlanta and beyond.

In the vast and vibrant world of Kuchipudi, Hema Shilpa Uppala continues to mesmerize audiences with her refined abhinaya (expressions), graceful movements, and elegant poise. Her ability to fully immerse herself in every role she portrays reflects both her artistic depth and years of disciplined training. Beyond her accomplishments as a celebrated Kuchipudi artiste, Ms. Hema Shilpa Uppala is also active in the American television and film industry as an actress, modeling choreographer, and modeling coach. She is a black belt holder in Taekwondo and practices yoga, meditation, and Kalaripayattu. In addition, she is a certified pranic healer and life coach. Guided by her belief in hard work, continuous learning, gratitude, and simplicity, she continues to inspire others through both her artistic and personal journey.
